Man charged in alleged baseball bat attack at Hackettstown barber shop

A Morris County man is in jail after allegedly striking another man with a baseball bat during an altercation at a Hackettstown barber shop. Miguel J. Ovalle-Matos, 30, of Wharton Borough is charged with third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon resulting in bodily injury and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was arrested following Friday’s incident and taken to the Warren County jail, pending a court appearance.
Shooting investigation underway in South Whitehall

The Lehigh County district Attorney’s Office said authorities are investigating a shooting in South Whitehall Township. Shots were fired around 1 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of North 38th Street. Lehigh Valley Breaking News on Facebook is reporting the Lehigh County Coroner’s office has been called to the scene. The coroner’s office is only called to death investigations.

Early Wednesday morning, a motorcyclist was struck and ejected during a police pursuit on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lehigh County, state police said. Pennsylvania State Police Cpl. Richard Levan, public information officer for Troop T, told lehighvalleylive.com the chase began at midnight, around mile marker 70.1 in Washington Township, Lehigh County.

Child cyclist struck in Macungie hit-and-run, police seeking dark SUV

Police are searching for a driver who allegedly struck a child on a bicycle and fled the scene in Macungie. The incident happened shortly before 8 p.m. Memorial Day along Hickory Street, between Lea and Church streets, borough police said. Photos on the police department’s Facebook page show the offending vehicle as a dark SUV. A national chain known for its fast-casual Indian cuisine is set to open at the Madison Farms shopping center in Bethlehem Township. Tikka Shack is moving into the 2,435-square-foot space that formerly occupied Wiz Kidz at the shopping center off Route 33 and Freemansburg Avenue. Wiz Kidz closed its township location last month after opening in July 2021. Prior to that, the space was Steak ‘n Shake.
Pedestrian struck twice and pinned under car in Salisbury, cops say

A 22-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after being struck by two vehicles and pinned under the second one while attempting to cross a major thoroughfare in Salisbury Township, police said. Township Police Cpl. Kevin Kress said the incident began shortly before 10:30 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of East Emmaus Avenue. The woman, who resides in Summit Hill, Carbon County, was attempting to cross the street when she was struck by a vehicle heading west, Kress said.

A Phillipsburg man is facing assault charges after allegedly stabbing another man during a parking lot altercation at a Hanover Township, Lehigh County restaurant. Chevel Marc Jean-Jacque, 36, of the 100 block of Washington Street, is charged with two counts felony aggravated assault; misdemeanor possessing an instrument of crime; misdemeanor simple assault; and summary harassment. Jean-Jacque on May 19 was arraigned before District Judge Daniel C. Trexler, who set bail at $75,000.

A Palmer Township cop assigned to Easton Area High School has pleaded guilty to a corruption of minors charge after sending an underage pupil a sexually explicit image of himself. John “J.T.” Smoke, 46, of Bangor appeared Thursday afternoon before Northampton County Common Pleas Court Judge Jennifer R. Sletvold.
16 pounds of meth seized during I-78 traffic stop, DA says

A New York man had about $125,000 worth of methamphetamine in his car during a stop along Interstate 78 in Williams Township, near the New Jersey border, authorities said. Joseph Reid, 41, of Brooklyn, is charged with felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and a summary traffic offense. He was arraigned Thursday before District Judge Robert A. Hawke, who set bail at $750,000. In lieu of bail, Reid was taken to Northampton County Prison.
