MANILA, Philippines — A subsidiary of Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) has received the green light from the Energy Market Authority (EMA) to build, own and operate two power-generating units in Singapore. The EMA has awarded the permit to MGen’s PacificLight Power Pte Ltd. (PLP), which owns an 800-megawatt (MW) liquefied natural gas-fired (LNG) power plant in Jurong Island, Singapore.

MANILA, Philippines — Household consumers should expect higher electricity bills this month as energy utility provider Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) increased rates by P0.4621 per kilowatt hour, to P11.4139 per kWh from P10.9518 per kWh last month. The increase is attributed to higher generation charge due to higher costs from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and existing power supply agreements (PSAs).

MANILA, Philippines — Energy utility provider Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said indications point to a higher generation charge this month as the Luzon grid was placed under red and yellow alerts with several power plants are either offline or running at a reduced capacity. “This is mainly due to higher Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) prices brought about by the tight supply condition, as power demand surged along with higher heat indices,” Meralco said.
