HONOLULU (Island News) -- As summer heats up, so does Hawaii's fire season. "Our new reality is that wildfire risk is here to stay. It is statewide and all islands have risk. But there is work we can do to reduce that risk and be better prepared," said Elizabeth Pickett, Co-Executive Director of the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization. The problem with this project comes not from zoning issues or a lack of permits, but instead neighbors who want to shut down the development. Hawaii on the Hill just wrapped up in Washington DC, which showcased island products and gave local business owners a chance to talk politics with national lawmakers. "Hawaii on the Hill is all about showcasing the products and services Hawaii has to offer and how it contributes to our nations economy," said Sherry Menor, President & CEO Chamber of Commerce Hawaii. The biggest event of the four day program is Taste on the Hill, which showcases both large and small island business products.

Some in Hawaii criticize the violence of the Los Angeles riots, and the response from the federal government. Hawaii has protests on a regular basis but it is rare that they turn violent - or evolve into riots like in Los Angeles. In part because both residents and police know people have a right to protest.
