Malaysia is a beautiful country, and Sepang is in a beautiful part of that beautiful country, the state of Selangor, on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia, its beaches lapped by the South China Sea. Most F1 folk used to stay at hotels near Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which is not actually in Kuala Lumpur at all – any more than London Gatwick or London Stansted or London Luton are in London – but is actually very near Sepang, and therefore very convenient for the Sepang circuit.

A star character voiced by Hollywood legend Paul Newman in the wildly successful 2006 Cars film, its depiction was based on the brilliant ‘Fabulous Hudson Hornet’ NASCAR. In CGI form, the talking car became an icon all over again. However, it was its stunning prowess on track first made the car a household name.

Few knew: ‘Uncle Ken’, firm of handshake and belief, kept a mean secret; and, with views to his past, present and, wisely, future, Jackie Stewart had let a couple of Ford bigwigs in on it, too. Stewart’s super-supportive soulmate Helen wasn’t told, to prevent her the agony of counting down the days to the rest of their lives together; and nor was team-mate François Cevert, so obviously living his best life.

“I had my own thoughts, of course, but we also tried to cherry-pick ideas. For instance, we didn’t stay completely within the racing community; we went to the aerospace industry for our chassis structure. North American was building the Atlas missile at that time; the Convair was at Fort Worth. Both were using fibreglass epoxy structures. I met a young fellow who had been involved in the design of jet engine fairings, but he wanted to get into the boat business.

James Hunt was the first Grand Prix driver I really disliked. It was, I suppose, a result of me being a member of the establishment, schooled in manners and diplomacy by Bruce McLaren. And if James specialised in anything apart from driving very fast, it was tweaking the nose of the establishment. He flatly refused to conform. He had surfed into Formula 1 on the foaming Hesketh champagne wave. The portly, wealthy young Lord Hesketh had come up through the proper schools, so he knew how to behave.

George Russell’s exclusion from the results of the Belgian Grand Prix after winning on the road was a slam-dunk. The FIA had no alternative but to exclude him once the Mercedes was found to be under the weight limit at the end. Regardless of whether it was because his tyres were more worn because he’d stopped only once, a strategy which no-one was expecting to be able to do going into the race. A set of tyres when new weighs 48kg.
