Councillor Hilary Bills welcomed Roger Dean to the Mayor’s parlour at the Council House to receive his pencil sketch of the Round Oak Steelworks monument, which was unveiled last month. His drawing captures the fine details of the 14-foot-tall monument, which was designed by Dudley’s borough artist Steve Field. The monument depicts a large industrial ladle suspended in the air pouring molten metal.

Parkfield Grange, Hagley Road will mark the occasion next week with a community day for residents with music, refreshments and singing along with a minute's silence to mark the anniversary, which occurs on May 8. Many of the residents lived through the war as youngsters and although memories have faded a little bit, they had no problem remembering the elation and party atmosphere of VE Day, which marked Victory in Europe and the end, for many, of the second world war.

The stunning backdrop of Our Lady of Lourdes RC church in Uxbridge Street provided the alternative venue for the annual celebration. With a grotto and a church building, which itself dates back to 1928, it was a lovely setting to take the place of the nearby Museum of Cannock Chase which shut its doors last week. Visitors could step back in time with food, music and dancing of the time - the Victory in Europe day took place on May 8, 1945.

The iconic Batmobile, drew crowds of excited fans to the shopping centre on Saturday, in an event centred around Forbidden Planet's comic book giveaway. The centre was transformed into a comic lover's paradise, with fans treated to free comics while supplies lasted, many of them having arrived early to secure their copies.

On a Bank Holiday Saturday she was joined by over 50 supporters for a show of defiance outside the building, whose lease is due to end early next year after it was opened in 2001. During last months community forum, residents asked whether the building would be knocked down for housing, and where services would be relocated to. More than 500 people signed a petition organised by Miss Kumar which was started at the packed out meeting.
