HighlightsWhat is New? •Overoptimistic reporting and misinterpretation of studies on clinical prediction models has received relatively limited attention in biomedical literature. These practices are known as ‘spin’ and are a wide phenomenon in other study designs.

Protocol development is a crucial step in mapping out any research study. It provides key details on the rationale, objectives, design, data collection, analysis methods and dissemination plans before a piece of research is conducted. Alongside study registration, protocols enhance transparency, replication and research integrity, and foster open-science principles.

AbstractWhen developing a clinical prediction model, assuming a linear relationship between the continuous predictors and outcome is not recommended. Incorrect specification of the functional form of continuous predictors could reduce predictive accuracy. We examine how continuous predictors are handled in studies developing a clinical prediction model.
