On Monday, January 13, the City of Pampa commissioners held their first bi-monthly meeting of the new year, opening up with public comments from Mr. Kirkpatrick. “In 1985, I accepted the position of Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Pampa. Upon accepting my position, I was informed that one of the first priorities was for me to develop this park east of town by the name of Recreation Park. It was an empty field with a silted-in lake and that’s all there was out there.

The White County Middle School Warriors put on a stellar performance on Aug. 8 as they secured a commanding 38-14 victory over Fentress County, advancing to 2-0 early in the season. In a game characterized by exceptional play in both the passing and rushing game, the Warriors’ offense proved to be a force to be reckoned with. The team amassed a total of 150 passing yards and 156 rushing yards, while limiting their opponents to just a mere 75 yards in total yardage throughout the game.

Cheryl Elaine Jones Bennett was born May 7, 1964, to Hershell Douglas and Joyce Elaine Judd Jones, and passed to her heavenly home, on Aug. 10, 2024, while at her residence. Cheryl is survived by her husband, Don Bennett; son, Steven Kyle (Sarah) Bennett; granddaughter, Aowlyn “Winnie” Bennett; brother, Mark (Grace) Jones; sister, Connie (Bruce) Manson; mother-in-law, Ruby Bennett; sister-in-law, Judy (David) Sain; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members are left to mourn.

Carol Joy Katolik Mayfield Johnson, 83, of Sparta, passed Aug. 10, 2024, at Life Care Center of Sparta. Carol was born Sept. 30, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, to John William and Mildred Twelbeck Katolik. She was a former garment factory worker and a proud homemaker. She was an active member of Hampton’s Crossroads Baptist Church. Carol loved sewing and crocheting when she was able and taking care of her four-legged companion, Luxy. Her greatest love was being Granny to her grandchildren.

Carroll Glenn Knight was born Dec. 17, 1959 in Pampa, Texas to Glenn and Mildred Knight. He passed away June 12, 2024 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Funeral service will be held June 22, 2024 10:00 AM at OK Cremation & Funeral Home located at 2415 North Walnut Ave., Oklahoma City OK. Carroll graduated from Pampa High School in 1978 and later earned a degree in drafting at Platt College. Carroll married the love of his life, Patricia Marie Knight in 1991 in Pampa, Texas. They later moved to Oklahoma City.

Highland Cemetery, which sits within Sparta’s city limits on a hill just outside of the center of the town, has been in use since 1908. The Highland Cemetery Trust Corporation’s board of directors has announced a project to preserve the history of one of Sparta’s largest cemeteries. “Recently, we’ve developed a modernization project to computerize our records and provide a cemetery website for the public’s benefit,” William D. Mitchell explained.
