Highland Cemetery, which sits within Sparta’s city limits on a hill just outside of the center of the town, has been in use since 1908. The Highland Cemetery Trust Corporation’s board of directors has announced a project to preserve the history of one of Sparta’s largest cemeteries. “Recently, we’ve developed a modernization project to computerize our records and provide a cemetery website for the public’s benefit,” William D. Mitchell explained.

Tennessee Department of Education recently released the statewide results for the English Language Arts portion of the spring 2024 TCAP tests as they relate to third and fourth graders across the state. According to the report, third grade scores remained steady while fourth grade students saw a significant improvement which they attribute to Tennessee’s nation-leading, comprehensive statewide literacy strategy.

Donna Mae Griffin, 56, of Cookeville, passed away June 9, 2024, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Donna was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1968, in High Point, North Carolina, to Willie Arvil “Bill” and Kathleen Ratcliff “Kathy” Griffin. Funeral service was 1 p.m., June 14, 2024, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Peeled Chestnut Cemetery. Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gary Conrad Copeland, 77, of Sparta, passed away June 13, 2024, in the emergency room of Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta. Gary was born April 12, 1947, in the Yankeetown community of White County, to Bailey Larimore and Daisy Frances Milligan Copeland He graduated from White County High School. While at WCHS, he was a member of the 1964 Jaycee Bowl football championship team, playing left tackle. He enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War.
