GREENVILLE, Maine — I was uneasy as the edge of the chair caught me behind the knees, depositing me onto the seat. It was a sensation I hadn’t experienced in 45 years. The chair swayed gently as we pulled the safety bar down in front of us. Skiers and snowboarders whizzed past below, sun reflecting off groomed snow as we ascended into a bright blue sky. My son Will and I chatted excitedly as we contemplated our first run down Big Moose Mountain.

My exciting hunting season is a tale of missed chances

It was the most exciting fall of my hunting life. The first week, I called in a big buck, only to have it bust me. It was one of a handful of missed opportunities during the recently concluded season. There were close calls, which taught me more important hunting lessons. But by the time muzzleloader season ended, I was almost relieved. The grind of hunting, interwoven with more important real-life responsibilities, can exact an emotional toll.

This story was originally published in October 2022. It was a perfect fall day in Aroostook County. Andrew Perry of Easton and some friends spent the day riding the roads while bird hunting and scouting for deer in the Oxbow area in the North Woods. They were not prepared for the show of natural beauty to which they were treated. “We just happened to come up around a bend and spotted fur,” Perry said.
He was shot while deer hunting in Maine. It changed his life forever.

Chad Thompson of Milford lay in the back seat, bleeding profusely, as his two friends raced to get him help. The Old Town High School students were deer hunting on the last day of firearms season on Nov. 28, 1992, when one of them accidentally fired his rifle while loading it. The bullet tore through the left upper thigh of the then-18-year-old Thompson, severing his femoral artery.

Several years ago, he and another hunter came upon a deer in a clearing. It appeared to be injured, but my friend shot it. Coming upon the deer, the hunters could see that it had been shot previously. A short time later, an older hunter emerged from the treeline.

Ordinarily, I would wait until harvesting a deer — or the end of the season — to talk about my hunting experiences. This time, I have to get it off my chest. I have been open about my hunting mistakes over the years and, even though some had happy endings, this one did not. After a fun but fruitless opening day hunting with my buddies Chris Lander and Billy Lander, I got back out again during the first full week of the season.
