There are so many old forest roads throughout the Boise National Forest, and other national forests, one forest ranger said they look like spaghetti on a map. That’s a lifetime of exploring for backcountry skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers to take advantage of each winter, away from groomed ski and snowmobile trails. Exploring logging roads is chancy. Just because a road appears on a map, doesn’t mean the trekking will be good.

It’s spring break. Hooray! It’s time for the family’s first campout, scenic drive or major fishing trip of the year. Over the years, these outings have stuck in my mind for spring break fun. Bass and crappie will be stirring at Brownlee Reservoir. Some of the best spring skiing and snowshoeing can be found at higher elevations. A lot of low-elevation campgrounds are accessible and good choices for late March and April.

Spring is one of the best times to see raptors at the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, south of Kuna. Many raptors return from their wintering grounds and visitors might see prairie falcons, turkey vultures, burrowing owls, northern sawwhet owls and rough-legged hawks, as well as year-round resident birds.

RT @SalmonOrcaProj: Hot tubs are great for humans. Not so much for salmon. The Columbia and Snake rivers are warming beyond survival limits…

Learn about places to go hiking and meet other hikers. Idaho Trails Association has plenty of volunteer projects: https://t.co/LUig1cJ1mu https://t.co/JQnC0Quao8
