Editor’s note: This story was first published in 2023 and has been updated. The Jersey Shore burns in my memory. My best childhood memories are there, amid the cots, chairs and foldup kitchen table in the room my parents would rent every summer at a pink-walled two-story hotel in Sea Isle City. The best year of my life — 1994 — was spent there, in a yellow house with a wraparound porch in Manasquan.

Editor’s note: This story publishes annually and has been updated. The Jersey Shore is once again open for business. Which means it’s time to brave the inevitable traffic apocalypse on the Garden State Parkway and head for our favorite towns, beaches, and boardwalks. What would we do without the Shore? I’d have to move, for one, because I’ve lived there nearly hallf my life.

Chinese food may have been supplanted by Italian and Mexican as America’s favorite cuisine, but it is no less beloved. There are about 45,000 Chinese restaurants in the U.S., and few are the towns and cities that don’t have at least one. May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, so it’s a great time to celebrate Chinese food. There are eight great regional Chinese cuisines: Szechuan, Cantonese, Hunan, Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Shandong.

Forget about Dunkin’, America runs on burgers. Nearly 60% of Americans eat at least one burger a week, and McDonald’s is by far the largest restaurant chain by sales. About 50 billion burgers will be eaten in the U.S. this year. Who sold the first burger in this country? It’s debatable. Some say it was introduced at the World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904. Others maintain Louis’ Lunch in New Haven made the first burgers in 1895.
