North Queensland continues to face a flood emergency, with some parts struck by close to 2 metres of rain since the disaster began on the weekend. Over the past 24 hours, more than half-a-metre of rain has again fallen in some areas, with Cardwell Gap hit by 655 millimetres and Paluma struck by 560mm. Since Friday afternoon, Paluma has recorded 1936mm, Cardwell Gap has had 1808mm, Ingham has had 1362 and Townsville has had close to 900mm.

Bernie Millar is used to waiting. She waited, submerged in her dam with her dog, as a bushfire ripped through her Tara property in February 2023. It killed many of her beloved goats, all her chickens and completely destroyed her home and belongings. Loading... She has since waited for disaster assistance assessments, soil reports, visits from tradies, and on hold with government departments for longer than she can remember. The only thing that won't wait is her animals.

Justin McCarthy is proof it's never too late to follow a dream. He started his motor racing career at 75. "I always wanted to go racing, but could never afford it," the 84-year-old said. Sitting in his 1925 Austin 7, he can't hide a big smile. "It's not very expensive, but it's an old car. You've got to lean over and if you want to go around as fast as you can," he said. In Leyburn, 200 kilometres west of Brisbane, going "as fast as you can" is the mission for more than 200 drivers every year.

Police say approximately 100 headstones were knocked over at Toowoomba's Drayton cemetery. The council says early estimates indicate some 300 graves have been affected and about half a million dollars' worth of damage has been done. Three teenagers were arrested by police and have been dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.
