A variety of phylogenetically distant taxa, including flatworms, mollusks, amphibians, and fishes, use the deadly neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) for predation and defense1. A well-known example is the blue-lined octopus, Hapalochlaena fasciata (Hoyle, 1886), which uses symbiotic bacteria to sequester TTX in its posterior salivary glands (PSG)2. When it bites, the TTX-laden saliva immobilizes large prey and has caused lethal envenomation in a few incidents involving humans3.

In previous work [Phys. Rev. X 5, 021020 (2015)] it was shown that stealthy hyperuniform systems can be regarded as hard spheres in Fourier space in the sense that the structure factor is exactly zero in a spherical region around the origin in analogy with the pair-correlation function of real-space hard spheres.

Jamming is an emergent phenomenon wherein the local stability of individual particles percolates to form a globally rigid structure. However, the onset of rigidity does not imply that every particle becomes rigid, and indeed some remain locally unstable. These particles, if they become unmoored from their neighbors, are called rattlers, and their identification is critical to understanding the rigid backbone of a packing, as these particles cannot bear stress.

Structural glasses form through various out-of-equilibrium processes, including temperature quenches, rapid compression (crunches), and shear. Gareth Morse was a landscape painter, an inspirational teacher, and a leading force in the foundation of art within the Western Australian College of Advanced Education, now known as Edith Cowan University, during the 1980s. Born in 1932 in the hard-scrabble mining region of the Rhondda Valley, Wales, he excelled at school, before moving to Bristol as a young man. There he studied fine arts and calligraphy at the West of England College of Art.

Hyperuniform many-particle systems are characterized by a structure factor S(k) that is precisely zero as |k|→0; and stealthy hyperuniform systems have S(k)=0 for the finite range 0<|k|≤K, called the “exclusion region.” Through a process of collective-coordinate optimization, energy-minimizing disordered stealthy hyperuniform systems of moderate size have been made to high accuracy, and their novel physical properties have shown great promise.
