Earlier today, the American Society of Cinematographers unveiled the nominations for their 39th annual ASC Awards. The nominees in the theatrical category, all of which are in the thick of the Oscar race for Best Cinematography, are Jarin Blaschke for Nosferatu, Alice Brooks for Wicked, Lol Crowley for The Brutalist, Stéphane Fontaine for Conclave, Greig Fraser for Dune: Part Two, Edward Lachman for Maria, and Phedon Papamichael for A Complete Unknown.

After a delay, the Producers Guild has announced their nominees. Now, PGA doesn’t usually line up ten out of ten with Oscar, but at least eight of these nominees seem very safe for Best Picture. You can see all of the nominees below, but September 5 and The Substance are vulnerable, with Nickel Boys and especially Sing Sing looming large. In fact, if you swap out September 5 for Sing Sing, that might be our Oscar lineup.

Last week, there was a fun little thing going around on social media where movies were being made into fake video games. It was Oscar fare as video game, which really amused me. It also inspired me to wonder about other films that had game potential. So, a new Awards Radar Community Question was formed. If you could play a 2024 release in video game form, what would it be? After a delay from last week, this afternoon saw the Writers Guild nominations for 2025 revealed. In the Original category, the nominees are A Real Pain, Anora, Challengers, Civil War and My Old Ass, while in Adapted it’s A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, Nickel Boys and Wicked. Keep in mind, WGA disqualifies many a screenplay each year, so if a film isn’t here that seems odd to be excluded, it’s because the script was deemed ineligible. So, just remember that.

To some degree, I was always going to be slightly disappointed by Wolf Man. After all, I was so intrigued by the initial premise, which was going to star Ryan Gosling and have Derek Cianfrance at the helm. That pairing is golden to me, so it’s no fault of the current incarnation of the film that it just felt less exciting.

This morning, the BAFTA nominations were revealed, unpausing awards season to some degree. Leading the way with twelve nominations was Conclave, though right behind at eleven was Emilia Pérez. The Brutalist received nine nominations, while Anora, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked each scored seven. Denzel Washington again was snubbed by BAFTA, so some things never change, but there are some interesting surprises below. Take a look at the full list of nominees next.

Not enough actresses are able to get the opportunity to direct. Now, we know that women in Hollywood are often being given short shrift, but it’s especially egregious here. So, seeing Julia Stiles get to write and direct her own project is exciting. With her debut Wish You Were Here, she’s adapted a book that hit her hard, hoping for audiences to feel the same way. While it’s flawed and inconsistent, there’s more than enough here to suggest that Stiles has a future as a filmmaker.
