A spokesperson for California State Parks verified that a shark incident took place at approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, roughly 100 yards from shore at Montara State Beach. No one was injured but lifeguards immediately cleared the water and posted beach closure signs for 48 hours. No further sightings have been reported. Earlier on Saturday a dead gray whale washed to the shore in Montara, leading to speculation that it attracted the shark.

The Cabrillo Unified School District Governing Board approved a 5% increase in salary scales for teachers, classified employees and district administrators effective January 1, 2025. The unanimous vote to approve the raise at the board’s May 15 meeting came with little fanfare after years of acrimony between the district and teachers subsided following an agreement last fall that averted a strike.

Edin Moises Guerraortiz, the 24-year-old man accused last summer of threatening co-workers at Mountain Mushroom Farm in Half Moon Bay pleaded no contest to one charge, and guilty to another, in court last week. San Mateo Superior Court Judge Kevin Dunleavy sentenced Guerraortiz to six months in custody and two years of probation. The incident occurred on the morning of July 24, 2024.
