The University of Southern California sits on Tongva land. The Gabrielino/Tongva tribe has lived in this area for time immemorial, far before any Europeans stepped foot in what is now Los Angeles. At one point, the Tongva language was one of the predominant spoken languages of the L.A. County area. Learning a new language, especially an endangered one, can be extremely daunting. I am currently attempting to learn Gaeilge (Irish) and it has been very difficult to find people around me who speak the language. Instead, I have started to slowly incorporate Irish phrases into my day-to-day life. While I may not always get the pronunciation spot on, it is helping me get language practice when I otherwise would not.

In my home state of Illinois, the official language was “American” from 1923 to 1969. To many, this may seem like an absolutely ridiculous official language, and the Illinois government would agree with you — it changed the official language to English in 1969. I, however, think that there could not be a better official language of a state.

USC can’t finish a drive, let alone a full four quarters. The Trojans (4-5, 2-5 Big Ten) traveled to rainy Seattle Saturday afternoon to play Washington (5-4, 3-3) at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium. USC conceded another miserable defeat, losing its fourth consecutive road game 26-21. The Trojans would trail the Huskies for most of the game, leading by a singular point for a brief moment in time before blowing their lead once again.

Earlier this year, the Daily Trojan’s season preview for soccer closed out with this statement: “With this season being USC’s inaugural season in the Big Ten, the Trojans have a chance of cementing themselves as the team to beat in their new conference.” On Sunday, the Trojans — after beating UCLA 1-0 at Dignity Health Sports Park — did just that.
