The University of Southern California sits on Tongva land. The Gabrielino/Tongva tribe has lived in this area for time immemorial, far before any Europeans stepped foot in what is now Los Angeles. At one point, the Tongva language was one of the predominant spoken languages of the L.A. County area. Nowadays, the Tongva language is functionally extinct, as there are no currently known living fluent speakers of the language.

Learning a new language, especially an endangered one, can be extremely daunting. I am currently attempting to learn Gaeilge (Irish) and it has been very difficult to find people around me who speak the language. Instead, I have started to slowly incorporate Irish phrases into my day-to-day life. While I may not always get the pronunciation spot on, it is helping me get language practice when I otherwise would not.

In my home state of Illinois, the official language was “American” from 1923 to 1969. To many, this may seem like an absolutely ridiculous official language, and the Illinois government would agree with you — it changed the official language to English in 1969. I, however, think that there could not be a better official language of a state.

USC can’t finish a drive, let alone a full four quarters. The Trojans (4-5, 2-5 Big Ten) traveled to rainy Seattle Saturday afternoon to play Washington (5-4, 3-3) at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium. USC conceded another miserable defeat, losing its fourth consecutive road game 26-21. The Trojans would trail the Huskies for most of the game, leading by a singular point for a brief moment in time before blowing their lead once again.

Earlier this year, the Daily Trojan’s season preview for soccer closed out with this statement: “With this season being USC’s inaugural season in the Big Ten, the Trojans have a chance of cementing themselves as the team to beat in their new conference.” On Sunday, the Trojans — after beating UCLA 1-0 at Dignity Health Sports Park — did just that.

On Thursday, No. 19 USC faced off against Illinois under the Demirjian Park lights and Sunday, it faced Northwestern at Martin Stadium. This marked the Trojans’ third meeting with Illinois of all time and their first meeting with Northwestern. Despite the unfamiliarity of these matchups, USC departed The Prairie State still undefeated in the Big Ten after notching a 3-2 win over Illinois and a 2-1 win over Northwestern.

The first time I ever encountered an endangered language was at the 2014 Aotearoa New Zealand All Blacks game against the United States Eagles. My mom, a former college rugby player, had heard the All Blacks were going to be playing at Soldier Field in Chicago and thought it would be a great way to introduce my brother and I to the sport. We got up early that morning, drove into the city and found our seats.

Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon that has shaped pop culture in the United States and abroad since the first movie came out in 1977. George Lucas’ creation of the franchise brought us iconic characters such as Darth Vader, Yoda, Princess Leia Organa and Chewbacca. The Star Wars universe is home to over 30 different languages — not including the over 50 human languages the movies have now been translated into.

The Trojans will head to Washington to play the Huskies Thursday at 6:30 p.m. This will be their first meeting since these former Pac-12 teams became members of the Big Ten. USC (4-1-1) is looking to defeat Washington (3-2-1) in its Big Ten debut. Soccer will pave the way for USC Athletics as this match will be the first conference game in the Big Ten of any USC team. Both teams intend to set the tone not only for this season, but for their legacy in their new conference.
