It didn’t take long for sparks to fly at NY1’s Democratic primary debate for Manhattan Borough President (MBP) — and the flashpoint was the future of casinos in Manhattan. State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, who represents much of the West Side including Hell’s Kitchen, didn’t mince words: “If you want a Manhattan casino, don’t vote for me.” He went on to call the centers for gambling a threat to quality of life, warning they “prey on addiction” and have no place in a residential borough.

Hell’s Kitchen welcomed a particularly regal visitor this week, as Princess Leonor of Spain arrived at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal aboard the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, the Spanish Navy’s training ship. The 19-year-old heir to the Spanish throne stood in uniform among fellow cadets, saluting as the ship docked at Pier 88 — a familiar waterfront recently flooded with Fleet Week sailors, but rarely with royalty.

Hell’s Kitchen got a taste of Milanese magic on Sunday as Caffe’ Rinaldi opened its kiosk in Balsley Park with a sunny welcome, a DJ and a lunchtime line that snaked down the sidewalk. The new café, which specializes in Italian panini and soft-serve gelato (even inside a brioche bun), drew dozens of locals — including many W42ST readers — for its grand opening giveaway of 100 free sandwiches.
