However, one widely accepted narrative is that it was first consumed in Jinhua, a small city in eastern China. Itâs claimed that Marco Polo, a merchant and adventurer from Venice, was so impressed by the ham when he visited China in the 13th century, he brought the techniques for dry-curing the meat home with him to Europe.
