In a major forthcoming exhibition in Suffolk the vibrant paintings of artist plantsman Cedric Morris will be showcased alongside the Surrealist works and ‘humbles’ (little sculptures in bone, wood and glass) of his lifelong partner, Arthur Lett-Haines. Cedric’s flower paintings, landscapes and portraits owe their inception in no small part to Lett, as he was known, so it is fitting that their works are married in Revealing Nature, which spans a period from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Fast forward 15 productive years and tulips have now taken over my life and the garden. I have a small, specialist flower farm, Bayntun Flowers, and have established a collection of over 100 different cultivars of historic tulips, dating back to 1595, which Plant Heritage has designated the National Collection of Tulipa (historic) – formed of both Dutch Historic and English Florists’ Tulips.

When we first moved to Blacklands in Wiltshire in the late summer of 2008 I was faced with the daunting challenge of filling a series of yawning herbaceous beds.
