Annie Schlechter likes polka dots. She can often be seen wearing custom-made shirts created from fabric thus patterned, specially ordered from stores in Seville, Spain. As she tells it, her fondness for these circles – invariably in a variety of hues – comes in part from a need to answer the proverbial question, ‘What is your favourite colour?’ For Schlechter it’s ‘too hard to pick’. She likes them all.

When we first moved to Blacklands in Wiltshire in the late summer of 2008 I was faced with the daunting challenge of filling a series of yawning herbaceous beds. It was too soon in our custodianship to start creating permanent planting plans, so my quick-fix solution was to wait until November then pack them with tulip bulbs.

The rooms are all surprisingly light, given the cornered shape of the building. And they are numbered as they would be in a New York apartment block, which I found cute. They are minimalist and have chic design touches, from the custom-made bed frames to the restored wall mouldings. The hand-painted ceramic lamps and guest room beds were crafted in collaboration with Tyler Hays of BDDW. The rooms also feature specially commissioned artworks.

A dragon guards the entrance to the Watts Chapel. Its image is carved into an enormous set of oak doors, where tangled limbs and a menacing grin are pierced by an iron cross. Above, a grand arch features angelic faces that alternate between looking up in hope and down in sorrow. This miracle in terracotta stretches across the exterior of the building, where ancient symbols of hope, liberty and spirituality adorn buttresses, capitals and columns.

First the kitchen. Brace yourself because Nigel Slater has two. Both are startling: startlingly beautiful, yes, but also just plain startling. Each has a sink and work surfaces – a giant slab of untreated zinc in one, a long bench of stainless steel in the other, and there are cookers, barely detectable, but there all the same, so, yes: kitchens. But where is all the stuff? Where are the pots and pans and chopping boards? This house in north London belongs to Britain’s most loved food writer.

Jonathan Gibbs loves a challenge. The artist and illustrator has built his career by deftly distilling the essence of a text into a bold graphic wood engraving, whether it be a book of poetry or a magazine issue. ‘I enjoy the collaborative relationship, the creative process between two people,’ he explains. Most recently, the artist turned his talents to May 2023’s Kitchens & Bathrooms supplement, creating a custom woodblock-printed illustration.

Opulence is a word that defines the oeuvre of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. His decadent canvases depict soulful and sensual beauty, conceived through visions of women, including his sister Christina, wife Elizabeth Siddal, and lovers Fanny Cornforth and Alexa Wilding. His settings took the form of abundant arbours filled with luscious blooms, or intimate apartments glistening with ornate furnishings.
