With centuries of work to its genre and countless millions of words in print, the history of science fiction is too vast to be summarized. It’s a field that encompasses endless themes, styles, ideas, and plots. It covers the full gamut of what it means to be human or alien. Even condensing the genre into its greatest writers is a task and a half.

While earning a bachelor’s degree in physics, Poul Anderson was using his education to dream up fantastic stories. His first short story was published (while he was still in school) in Astounding Science Fiction magazine. After graduating with honors, he turned to writing full time. Over the course of his career, Anderson published more than one hundred novels and short stories. His influence on the science fiction and fantasy world helped shape the genre over the ‘60, ’70s, and '80s.

Short story about an astronomer who has horrible luck – maybe by Poul AndersonI think this short story was by Poul Anderson (or maybe Frederic Pohl?) and that it appeared in the early to mid-1970s. It was not an Analog-type story, so that leaves the other magazines published in that period, like F&SF or Galaxy. The main character is an astronomer who begins life with high hopes but ends up failing in everything he does.

Poul Anderson is best known for his science fiction, but he was also one of the great fantasy and historical fiction writers of the 20th century, as well as a founding member of the Society for Creative Anachronism. His fantasy and historical fiction novels tended to focus on the Viking Age and/or Norse myths, and War of the Gods is my favorite of these. It is a rousing novelization of Book 1 from Saxo Grammaticus’ Gesta Danorum, one of our foremost sources of Norse mythology.
