The Value of Solar Study (VOSS) was launched by OfReg in 2022 with the purpose of determining how much consumers should be paid for generating their own solar power, such as installing photovoltaic tiles on their roof, and selling it back to the power grid.

Updated: Friday’s British Airways flight between Grand Cayman and the UK has been cancelled after a fire caused a major power outage at Heathrow Airport. The airport, one of the busiest in the world, was closed down entirely on Friday, impacting more than 1,300 flights. Power was returned to Heathrow about 2:15pm, UK time, and some flights resumed, according to media reports.

A health warning about smoke from a fire at a landfill site has been issued for Cayman Brac. Environmental health officials said people downwind of the dump should keep doors and windows closed and limit outside activity in areas where smoke persisted. The caution came after smoke and flames were spotted at the landfill site on Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters fought the blaze into Wednesday to bring it under control.

Cayman imported more than $415 million worth of goods in the third quarter of last year, the latest figures have shown. The Economics and Statistics Office said the figure for July to September 2024 was 9.1% up compared with the $389.7 million recorded in the same period the previous year. Officials said the change reflected a 16.2% jump in the value of petroleum-related imports, as well as an 8% increase in the value of non-petroleum goods.

Cayman children start drinking at age 11 on average, a survey has found. The study also reported that alcohol was the earliest drug used by youngsters, the most common and that 10.2% of the young people surveyed had admitted they had been drunk at least once in the past year. Researchers also found that “reports of being drunk increased as grade levels increased”. A total of 570 pupils — 17.3% of those surveyed — had used alcohol by the time they were aged 13 or younger.
