Thanks to all of you who joined me live with Heather Cox Richardson and Joanne Freeman. I always love hearing their historical perspective, especially at this moment in American political life. I think I’m starting to get the hang of this whole Substack Live thing. What do you all think? They also joined me beforehand for a special in-person taping of the Stay Tuned podcast — that episode drops Thursday. Don’t miss it!It’s only been two days, but I’m so thrilled to be here on Substack with you all.

Thanks to those of you who joined Preet Bharara and me last night for his first-ever Substack Live. I was happy he kept the dad jokes to a minimum, but if you were with us, you know we’re that oddball combination of cornball and serious when we get going. Now, we’re coming to Substack, and whether you’ve been with us for a long time or you’re new, I hope you’ll join us. Here’s why.

We received multiple listener questions this week all asking a version of the same fundamental question: In light of President Trump taking power for the second time, what are the limits on his authority to direct the military to do his bidding? Presumably this is on people’s minds because President Trump has repeatedly suggested he would use the military for his domestic agenda.
