When I was seven, we moved to Shannon, Ireland’s newest town. Our house was in the middle of a pebble-dashed terrace, just metres from the community hall. In the mid-1970s, Shannon was a place in flux, with people arriving every week. Many were returning emigrants who’d been drawn to the town by the promise of work at the airport or industrial estate. The playground of St Conaire’s national school hummed with London and Birmingham accents. Other children had been born in America or Canada.
