    St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore says his office has cleared a backlog of nearly 7,000 cases that were awaiting charges. “Really, the story of the last two years for this office is a story of the community coming together and collaborating to address a situation that had reached a crisis point,” Gore said Tuesday at a news conference marking two years in office. Then-Gov. Mike Parson appointed Gore to the circuit attorney post in May 2023 after Kim Gardner resigned under pressure.

    The Missouri Supreme Court has ordered a judge in Kansas City to lift two rulings that halted enforcement of the state's near-total ban on abortion. After voters in November approved Amendment 3 to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution, the Planned Parenthood affiliates serving the state sued. In December, Judge Jerri Zhang of the 16th Circuit ruled that the ban violated the constitution.

The damage doneSt. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer said the city assessor's office estimates there was at least $1 billion in property damage. Of the 5,000 buildings in the tornado's path, at least 4,400 sustained some damage, said Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson.

    The Missouri Supreme Court is considering whether both cities and counties can tax recreational marijuana sales at 3%. The court on Tuesday heard arguments in a case brought by Robust, which operates dispensaries across Missouri, including in Florissant in north St. Louis County. In April 2023, voters in both Florissant and St. Louis County approved a 3% sales tax authorized by the state's marijuana legalization amendment.

    A St. Louis-based nonprofit legal advocacy firm has sued the State of Missouri, saying that the excessive heat at a prison in Jefferson City during the summer months violates the constitutional rights of the people who are held there. The MacArthur Justice Center filed a class-action case on Monday on behalf of six inmates at Algoa Correctional Center. All of them are especially sensitive to heat due to their age or underlying medical conditions, or have spent time in solitary confinement.
