A glance back at 2024 reveals a year of change and achievement at The Charlotte Observer, and in the communities we've served. The journalism we produced was ambitious and important. The work has often been uplifting, and at times has tested our resolve as journalists at the center of crisis and disaster. A five-part series, along with a powerful documentary, surfaced the agony of Charlotte's deadliest plane crash and highlighted the resilience of its few survivors.

The Charlotte Observer is taking another bold step forward in its transformation to a digital-forward newsroom that meets the expectations and demands of today's news consumers. Starting Sept. 16, The Observer will publish the newspaper on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The papers will be delivered on the same day by the U.S. Postal Service, with the Sunday paper arriving on Saturdays.

My ears were still ringing for a while after absorbing the drums, guitars and amazing vocals at a recent concert in Ovens Auditorium. But I wasn't complaining; after all, it was a great night of music in Charlotte. Charles “Lefty” Driesell was the perfect fit. Georgia State had no national distinction. Driesell was a household name. Georgia State stood pat as the guaranteed victory on many schedules. Driesell arrived in 1997 and changed that in a hurry, inking wins against heavyweights like Georgia and St. Joseph’s. By the 2000-2001 season he marched his team into the NCAA tournament and set a school record with 29 victories.

While the ways we receive and consume news are transforming, measures of journalistic success are unchanged. . Were the stories interesting, informative or entertaining? Did they better connect our communities and help us to be more empathetic and understanding? And ultimately, did the journalism make an impact? As much as the world around us has evolved - and as much as our own newsroom has adapted to that evolution - the mission at The Charlotte Observer hasn't wavered.
