LOS ANGELES — The Yankees saved some face beating the Dodgers 7-3 on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium. After two really bad days, a blown three-run lead with Max Fried pitching in a Friday night’s 8-5 loss and an 18-2 whipping on Saturday, the Yankees avoided being swept in this World Series rematch weekend.

LOS ANGELES — Yankees manager Aaron Boone didn’t want to monkey around getting to the finish line of Sunday night’s 7-3 win over the Dodgers. With the Yankees up four runs in the eighth inning, the bullpen phone rang for Luke Weaver, their closer and best reliever. Weaver warmed up while the Yankees were batting in the ninth, then after finishing this tosses he started to do his stretching and felt something wrong. There was discomfort in one of his hamstrings.

LOS ANGELES — Before this World Series rematch weekend at Dodger Stadium was over, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked to put it in perspective. The Dodgers beat unbeaten ace Max Fried in the series opener, then handed the Yankees their worst beating in six seasons the next day, an 18-2 shellacking. The Yankees turned the tables on Sunday with a convincing 7-3 victory, but the Dodgers still won the series. Are there any psychological advantages to winning or losing a series like this?

LOS ANGELES — Former Mets first baseman/corner fielder Dominic Smith gave up on getting a major-league opportunity with the Yankees after having two more good games at the plate this weekend for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Smith exercised the opt-out clause in his minor-league contract on Sunday to become a free agent, ESPN reported. Smith, who turns 30 on June 15, was tied for second on the RailRiders with eight homers and 28 RBI while hitting .255 with a .782 OPS in 45 games.

LOS ANGELES — The Yankees’ bullpen had to eat up a lot of innings during losses to the Dodgers on Friday and Saturday, so they added a fresh arm for Sunday’s series finale. Right-handed starter Carlos Carrasco, a starter for the Yankees early on this season, is back from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to be a long relief option and righty Yerry De los Santos was optioned to Triple-A.
