WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Mother’s Day 2025 was a lot of fun for one of the Yankees’ breakout stars even though a little pain was mixed in. Ben Rice is hit by pitches so often that he’s becoming the Yankees’ new Anthony Rizzo. He was drilled two more times in Sunday’s 12-2 romp of the Athletics, which makes six for the season. That leads the American League. His one hit made the day special.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The very best part of Yankees captain Aaron Judge‘s Sunday had nothing to do with baseball. Better than four more hits or the amazing sliding catch in shallow right field that almost resulted in a double play after a throw from the knees …Better than blowing out the Athletics 12-2 in a ballpark that is an hour drive from Linden, his Northern California hometown …Better that all that was waking up and wishing his wife a happy Mother’s Day for the first time.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Luis Severino was laughing last June when he claimed the Yankees had only two good hitters on their first-place ballclub, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. This was some playful public retaliation to Severino’s former Yankees teammates jokingly claiming in text messages that he was ducking a first chance to face them after the Mets pushed back his scheduled start to go with a left-hander. The Yankees let it go, but they didn’t like the dissing. And they didn’t forget it.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — With veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco outrighted to Triple-A after he was designated for assignment and cleared waivers last week, the Yankees opted to go with long reliever Ryan Yarbrough to start Sunday’s game against the Athletics. Next weekend, the lefty probably will get another start when Juan Soto and the Mets visit Yankee Stadium for a Subway Series.
