SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN TV) — For Suncoast standards, this week hasn’t been that warm compared to the average. In fact, it’s the 53rd coolest stretch from April 19 to April 25 we’ve recorded since 1911, which puts it close to the middle. But temperatures are set to begin warming up today. The warmup is due to strong ridging in the jet stream that we’ve been talking about all week. As ridging strengthens over the eastern U.S., temperatures are expected to warm.

VENICE, Fla. (SNN TV) — Tempers flared in Venice as the city council asked voters to lengthen their terms and end odd-year elections. In a 5-2 vote, the city council took a step to approve a referendum that would eliminate elections in 2025 and 2027, as well as provide a one-year term extension for council Seats 3 through 7. The two votes against the proposal, Joan Farrell and Ron Smith of Seats 1 and 2, would not receive term extensions and would instead run for a four-year term in 2026.

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (SNNTV) — The Sarasota County Commission cut all funding to one of the most well-known charities in the country. “Any relationship between Sarasota County and any organization that provides referrals to organizations which provide abortion services and information shall be terminated,” Commissioner Michael Moran said, reading from the resolution.

It’s another day where temperatures increase a bit in the area, particularly in the mornings as temperatures have come up to the low to mid 60s after bottoming out at 61 on Wednesday. The real warmup is this weekend as a strong ridge develops over the eastern U.S.Temperatures will rise to the upper 80s as the ridge develops, with overnight lows sticking to the mid 60s range, which is a degree or two above the seasonal average.

SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN TV) — It’s a sunny start to our Wednesday as high pressure remains the dominant player in our forecast. With high pressure in place, sunshine remains the story mid-late week on the Suncoast. Over the next few days, strong ridging in the jet stream, denoted by the “mountain” shaped orange and yellow on the map below, will settle in the eastern U.S.This means temperatures will crank up in the area, hitting the upper 80s late week with 90s possible in inland areas.
