Voters considered school levy requests May 6 in several communities, including Ravenna, Streetsboro and Mogadore. The Ravenna, Streetsboro and Mogadore school districts have new money issues on the primary ballot. Aurora City Schools is seeking the renewal of a levy, along with Springfield Local Schools in Summit County, which has some voters in Portage County. The Ravenna school district was seeking passage of Issue 12 − a 5.47-mill, 5-year property tax that would generate $2.75 million annually.

After 20 years of leasing storefronts in Streetsboro, Goodwill Industries is investing in its own property. Goodwill Industries has purchased the former Aldi store at 9071 State Route 14 in Streetsboro, which closed in January 2025 when a new store opened at 9570 State Route 14. Leah Davis, manager of public relations and marketing for Goodwill Industries of Akron, said the site is the second building that the non-profit has purchased in the region.

A Ravenna man has admitted sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl last year. Emilio Joseph Lee Dial, 22, pleaded guilty Monday in Portage County Common Pleas Court to charges of rape and attempted rape, according to the Portage County Prosecutor's Office. Judge Becky Doherty ordered the court's adult probation office to conduct a presentencing investigation. According to a Ravenna police report, officers responded Aug. 3 to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center.

A man who last had a Ravenna Township address has been charged in a March residential fire in the township. Austin James Gregory McElwain, 20, last known address on Sprafka Drive in Ravenna Township, was charged Tuesday with second-degree felony aggravated arson in Portage County Municipal Court in Ravenna Tuesday.

RAVENNA − A Portage County jury found a Garrettsville man guilty of sexually abusing a girl in Aurora. The jury of six women and six men found Nicholas Lee Blankenship, 42, guilty of all six counts in a grand jury indictment, including two counts each of first-degree felony rape, second-degree felony sexual battery and third-degree felony gross sexual imposition. The verdict followed a two-day trial in Portage County Common Pleas Court.
