Critics say a funding battle in Ohio's Statehouse is pitting pro sports against public schools. State lawmakers are considering spending $600 million to fund state bonds to fund a stadium for the Cleveland Browns. Some Portage County officials said while they love the Browns, they don't think this is right. During a tax forum on April 16, Portage County Treasurer John Kennedy pointed out it would require $800 million to fully fund Ohio's K-12 schools through the Cupp-Patterson plan.

A 16-year-old student at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center was killed Friday night in a single-vehicle crash in Portage County that also injured three other teens. The crash was about 10 p.m. Friday in Palmyra, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. A 2024 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling southeast on Scotts Corners Road when it went off the right side and into a ditch about a half-mile northwest of Jones Road, a news release said.

A fundraiser for the Veterans Grave Marker Project is planned May 3 at Ravenna Elks Club. Tickets are $20 per person and will be available until March 27, or until all tickets are sold out. Doors open at 5 p.m. for social time, and the dinner and event begin at 6 p.m.Event organizers say fewer than 30 tickets are available. The event will include inner, raffle baskets, a Kentucky Derby simulcast during dinner and live music from Dave and Jeff.
