A Kent man was reported in stable condition April 22 after his car was destroyed in a single-vehicle crash on State Route 14 in Streetsboro the evening before. Police Lt. Rich Polivka said that Streetsboro EMS took the 26-year-old driver to UH Portage Medical Center, and he was later transferred to Summa Akron City Hospital. Police and EMS responded to the scene of the crash after receiving calls at around 5:20 p.m. April 21.

A Ravenna man has admitted sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl last year. Emilio Joseph Lee Dial, 22, pleaded guilty Monday in Portage County Common Pleas Court to charges of rape and attempted rape, according to the Portage County Prosecutor's Office. Judge Becky Doherty ordered the court's adult probation office to conduct a presentencing investigation. According to a Ravenna police report, officers responded Aug. 3 to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center.

A Streetsboro man is accused of seriously injuring an elderly woman Sunday while trying to kill her at his home. Richard Craig McNeal, 57, is charged with first-degree felony attempted murder, according to Portage County Municipal Court records. Streetsboro EMS responded to McNeal's Leslie Avenue home after he called to report a woman had fallen down the stairs and needed an ambulance at 1:26 p.m. Sunday, Police Chief Tricia Wain said in an email Monday to the Record-Courier.

A Newton Falls man twice convicted for nearly killing a Ravenna Township woman with a hammer will continue serving the sentence that was imposed on him more than eight years ago. Portage County Common Pleas Judge Becky Doherty sentenced David M. Smith, 57, on April 18 to 22 years in prison. It was the same sentence she handed down following his first trial in late 2016. Doherty credited Smith for time already served.

Two Ravenna men claiming their civil rights were violated after a Portage County sheriff's deputy stopped them on Interstate 76 in 2023 have dropped a federal lawsuit, at least for now. Plaintiffs Zephiniah Robinson, 23, and Jack Metcalf, 36, filed a notice of dismissal in the case against Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski and sheriff's deputies Sean Bradley, Robert Paolucci and Anthony Zappone in U.S. Sixth District for the Northern District of Ohio on March 24.

Homeless man charged after flashing fake gun at Kent child care center

No children were hurt Monday when a man tried to enter a Kent childcare facility with what initially was reported to be a gun. A 26-year-old man reported to be homeless is in custody after Tiny Town Child Care and Learning Center at 1145 Lake St. in Kent went into lockdown. Kent police Lt. Mike Lewis said it was reported that a man smoking a cigarette and carrying what appeared to be a gold-colored handgun walked up to the front door of the daycare and tried to enter.
