1 IntroductionThe gut microbiome is the complex community of microorganisms residing in the human gastrointestinal tract, responsible for numerous functions impacting human health and well-being (Rooks and Garrett, 2016; Tropini et al., 2017). Alterations in intestinal microbial composition are associated with a range of diseases, from acute infections to chronic disorders (Guinane and Cotter, 2013; Gilbert et al., 2018; Heilbronner et al., 2021).
