The bidirectional communication between the microorganisms inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract and the brain along the microbiota-gut-brain axis is known to influence feeding and eating behavior. However, the role of this axis in the development and maintenance of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), an eating disorder characterized by restrictive eating, has yet to be investigated.

We conducted a discovery-validation study. The study was approved by the human subjects committee of the Kaiser Foundation Research Institute. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants. The discovery set was from the prospective Pregnancy Environment and Lifestyle Study (PETALS), a longitudinal multi-racial/ethnic cohort study with its study design described in detail elsewhere [10].
