And with an almighty thud, my council tax bill for the next year arrived through the letterbox, heavily laden with portents of doom. Sure, you can tut at the idea of Aberdeenshire Council slapping up their demands with menaces by 10%, but it’s only when you see it in black and white you realise exactly what our glorious leaders have done.

News that the UK Government is offering £350,000 per year for the Chief Executive Officer of Great British Energy (GBE) has, predictably, raised eyebrows. For some, it seems excessive for a publicly funded position. But as someone who works in executive search and recruitment, I can tell you: this is simply the market rate for a role of this scale, complexity, and pressure.

It’s been five years since the world went into lockdown and we said goodbye to a British icon – Topshop. It seems almost unthinkable now but 11 years ago, Scotland’s successful future was inextricably linked by then First Minister Alex Salmond to North Sea oil. According to Salmond, gearing up for 2014’s independence referendum, black gold would make Scotland one of the richest nations on earth. It was all terribly rousing, I’m sure, but it was based on fantasy. The SNP’s “vision” for an independent Scotland depended on crude oil selling at a minimum of $110-a-barrel.

There is something rather emotional about watching an audience rise to their feet and give three local ladies a standing ovation. And last night’s opening of Witches of Eastwick had me in tears when the show’s stars took their final bow. I consider myself one of Lyric Musical Society’s biggest fans, aside from the friends and relatives of those on stage, of course. And every year they never fail to impress me. The Witches of Eastwick as a show itself is not my favourite.
