    The Desk Book Club—through our discussions and Sunday afternoon Zoom hang-outs—has been a highlight of this year. In 2024, we read Small Fires by Rebecca May Johnson, Food in Cuba by Hanna Garth, and Longthroat Memoirs by Yemisi Aribisala so far, and to finish up the year, we’ll be reading Eating to Extinction by Dan Saladino.     Who would've thought I could experience all the joys of an island break without leaving the UK? The Channel Islands offer pearl-white beaches, coastal walks, and the warmth of the south of France (albeit in summer), all without opening my passport. While I do actually already live by the coast, in Brighton, it’s quite easy to get distracted by the buzz of the city. However, in Jersey, far removed from the bustling pace, immersing myself in the great outdoors was not just a choice but a necessity.

    When I started this newsletter in 2020, I didn’t know it would be the foundation of a new way of working for me. I’ve been in digital media since 2009, when I was 23, and have been freelancing as a food writer since 2015. As a freelancer, I usually had what we call an ā€œanchor gigā€: a stable base of money to rely on monthly that would pay fixed bills, and beyond that, I’d be hustling, pitching, and chasing down invoices.
