Just weeks earlier on March 3, another fight made headlines after a 10th-grade student at Mallard Creek High School in north Charlotte said she was attacked by seven other girls, sustaining a concussion.

Student discipline policies and enforcement in North Carolina public schools can vary based on district. Experts say that's by design. When it comes to school safety and discipline policy, every district in North Carolina is beholden to what's in state law. Other than that, there's a lot of leeway. The State Board of Education puts forward a policy, and local boards have the ability to modify it to meet the needs of their districts, said Karen Fairley, director of the NC Center for Safer Schools.

[email protected] Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools plans to give raises to some staff this year with $8.3 million from Mecklenburg County. The pay increases would be for "classified" staff - those who support day-to-day operations and don't teach. That includes roles like cafeteria workers, physical therapists and bus drivers.
