A 96-year-old man is dead, and a 17-year-old girl is in serious condition after a head-on crash on State Road 16 Thursday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Officials gathered last week to mark a key milestone in the construction of a new K-8 school in the heart of the SilverLeaf community with a “topping out” ceremony, celebrating the completion of the building’s structural framework. Sadie Haynes, 15, was in a Fleming Island crosswalk last week when a 68-year-old driver plowed into her petite frame, leaving her crumpled and unconscious on the asphalt.
