The 69-year-old Chicago native is the first American pope. After the death of Pope Francis on April 21st, 133 cardinals gathered to elect the pope in the secret conclave in Rome. It was announced Thursday with white smoke billowing from the top of the Sistine Chapel and the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica ringing.
