Friday was a momentous day for the Davis community. The long-awaited Walnut Park Library has officially broken ground in South Davis. On a sunny spring morning, elected officials, community members, library supporters and schoolchildren from nearby Montgomery Elementary School gathered together to celebrate the project, which has been decades in the making. The newest Yolo County branch library will be the second in the city, alongside the Mary L. Stephens branch, which has become overcrowded.

On Tuesday night, Davis Police Chief Todd Henry updated the Davis City Council on Saturday’s Picnic Day shooting that took place at Community Park. Henry says that after the shooting occurred, which injured three, many of the partygoers in the park were unaware of what had happened, making clearing the park and securing the crime scene difficult. Therefore, getting all of the occupants of the park to leave took a substantial amount of time despite DJ and helicopter announcements.

The board received an update from health officer Dr. Aimee Sisson regarding a number of communicable diseases in the county. The United States has experienced several measles outbreaks, with 607 cases reported in 2025 so far. 97% of these cases are in unvaccinated individuals.
