    As someone who has played a lot of games, I am always interested in seeing how a game addresses the issue of which player goes first. Turn order and initiative systems are fundamental design choices. Having the ability to act first can give a strategic or tactical advantage to the “first mover” in achieving the game’s winning conditions. Like the first mover advantage in business, this potential is dependent on many other factors.

    Sorry this is late. I’ve been remarkably busy. Every now and then I encounter a book that changes the way I think about the world. Sometimes a book has one insight and sometimes it has several. In the case of Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow, I've lost count of the ways it has forced me to re-evaluate my perceptions. This is partly because the book covers a wide terrain of psychology and partly because it presents so many interesting observations.

Recently, Manchester University Press asked me if I wanted an advance proof copy of Peter Maxwell-Stuart’s new edition of The Malleus Maleficarum or ‘The Hammer of Witches.’ I said yes, of course.

    School board: Fun Days dance card is full On Monday, June 12, the Esko school board heard a presentation from the Esko Hockey Association about hosting the Esko Fun Days street dance at the district’s sports complex next to the football field. The hockey group is looking to relocate the event, away from the parking lot at the firehall out of concern for the safety of those walking across the street in the dark, the blocking off of access to the hall, and noise issues.
