As someone who has played a lot of games, I am always interested in seeing how a game addresses the issue of which player goes first. Turn order and initiative systems are fundamental design choices. Having the ability to act first can give a strategic or tactical advantage to the “first mover” in achieving the game’s winning conditions. Like the first mover advantage in business, this potential is dependent on many other factors.

The discourse surrounding Wizards of the Coast’s recent slander of Gary Gygax has produced something that RPG discourse rarely receives; mainstream attention. In this case, it drew the ire of the richest man in the world who just so happens to be a longtime fan of Dungeons & Dragons. As a frequent contributor to the RPG discourse, I couldn’t help but feel like a battle-weary Imperial Guardsman seeing an Ultramarine Drop Pod crash onto the field and a squad of Terminators emerge from it.

On a recent episode of the Old Glory Club’s Pony Express Radio, host and OGC President RedHawk and company talked about the James Bond franchise which stirred up quite the conversation among the panelists. The idea of an OGC Stream focused on James Bond was very appealing to me, and it made me think about the importance of Bond in my life. I would consider myself to be a superfan of the franchise.

I have been a father for just over two and a half years. In that short period of time, I have watched all 194 episodes of the Australian animated children’s show Bluey probably ten times each. My daughter is enamored with this show, as many children are and there’s a good reason for it; Bluey is quite simply one of the best children’s shows ever produced.

I haven’t done an article like this in quite some time, but recent events have had me in a somewhat reflective mood. Both the embarkation upon Project Skeleton and the events surrounding my Kickstarter campaign have me thinking about RPG philosophy more than I have in awhile. In the lead-up to my stream Anatomy of an RPG Ruleset, I began thinking about what exactly a game is. There was only one word that accurately described a game other than the word itself; simulation.

In my last article, I began a discussion of dueling in RPGs by introducing some mechanics for pistol dueling. Now I have a much more arduous task in front of me; melee dueling. As I said in the last article, the level of abstraction of combat needs to correlate with the scale of the combat. A skirmish between two small groups of combatants requires a different level of detail than a massive battle or a one-on-one duel.
