House File 792, also called Kristen’s Law, would charge people with first-degree murder if they distributed fentanyl and killed someone. Kristen’s family says they want to prevent another family from experiencing pain like theirs. Kristen Ewing was known for making others laugh. But her laugh can now only be heard in her family’s home through old videos.

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) - The stands at an eastern Iowa high school basketball game were filled with purple shirts and ribbons in memory of the school’s cheerleader who lost her life in a crash. Purple was Kelli Schmitz’s favorite color. The 14-year-old from Jesup died in a crash Tuesday morning while she was heading to school. On Wednesday, the Don Bosco boys’ basketball team asked fans to wear purple to honor Kelli as the team faced Maquoketa Valley in a postseason matchup.

SOLON, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) - A woman in Iowa is spreading awareness about ice fishing safety after her grandfather fell through the ice of a frozen lake and died over the weekend. Amanda Willson said she could hear the ice at Lake Macbride cracking when she visited Sunday. She recorded a video of the sounds the lake made just one day after her 85-year-old grandfather fell into the frigid waters while he was ice fishing.
