BOONE, Iowa — The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team is a JUCO powerhouse. The Bears have reached the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II World Series 11 times in the last 12 years. But they're also known for producing elite slappers. "Slappers are left-handed hitters who we move through the box as we hit, and we use it to our advantage to try to throw off defenses," DMACC sophomore outfielder Breanna Caffery said.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — University of Northern Iowa's Hunter Manock and Carter Morton are having the best year of their careers. During the indoor season, they helped lead UNI to the Missouri Valley Conference team title. Morton took home the MVC title in the triple jump, long jump and high jump. He was also named the Most Valuable Athlete and Most Outstanding Field Athlete of the meet. Manock won UNI's first indoor conference title in the men's 60-meter hurdles since 2022.

Now, he's teaching the Bulldog defensive linemen to do the same in his first-ever coaching job. "I feel like I can relate to them because I really just got out of college a couple years ago, so being able to relate to them in that way is pretty is pretty special," Evans said.
