The federal election will use a majoritarian system we know as first past the post, that means the candidate with the most votes in a riding wins. However, critics of the first past the post system say that it poorly represents voter intent. As an example, the recent provincial election saw Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives return to power with a third straight majority, securing 80 seats with only 43 per cent of the vote across the province.

Unifor Local 444 has told its members at the Stellantis Windsor Assembly Plant the union was notified on Wednesday evening of a two-week shutdown following the announcement of new U.S. tariffs earlier in the day — and more schedule changes are expected to come. On Wednesday, the union posted a message to its Facebook page relaying company plans to be “down for two weeks” beginning April 7.

There are six candidates seeking the seat in the Chatham-Kent—Leamington riding in Ontario’s Feb. 27 election. It’s a riding that brings together the communities of Leamington, Comber, and Tilbury as well as the city of Chatham, the Township of Pelee, and other parts of the former Kent County including Ridgetown, Highgate and Erieau. Elections Ontario puts the riding population at 113,585 residents, using 2021 census data.

You can add the Ontario Home Builders’ Association to the list of industry groups raising the alarm over U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned tariffs on steel and aluminum. The association issued a news release this week indicating its concern the tariffs would stunt already anemic housing starts while further harming near record-low levels of affordability.
