The reporters in the rented pick-up pulled up behind a truck full of young men whose guns were sticking out the windows. After hearing a warning that the road would be rough, the PublicSource team followed the Noongar hunters into the bush. Minutes later, the reporters found their wheels spinning in sand, when suddenly the hunters’ vehicle zipped ahead. The young Noongar men — members of one of Australia’s largest Indigenous groups — had bagged a kangaroo.

Allegheny County’s winter shelter is set to formally close today, ending what the Department of Human Services characterized as a successful season. But that closure comes at a time when options for unhoused people are increasingly scarce and some may be resorting to perilous alternatives, including abandoned buildings. Since December, the department [ACDHS] has provided winter shelter space for people in Perry South, two winters after the controversial closure of a longtime Downtown location.

The April rain let up long enough for Talan Baker to take his first solo ride on the family Harley, and he immediately resolved on riding it off into his future. “I’m taking your Harley with me” to vocational school near Johnstown, Baker, 19, told his father, Christopher Micknowski, as they milled about the five-motorcycle garage in their Lincoln Place home.

I still catch myself going to the passenger side, even when I’m the one driving — which isn’t often. I’ll borrow a friend’s car occasionally, but for the most part, I’m a “passenger princess.” I got my license when I moved to Pittsburgh, but I found quickly that affording to buy a car as a freelance reporter was a pipe dream. So, I’ve remained a passenger. People have varying opinions on it — that it’s impossible, that it’s doable but not ideal, or that it’s a political statement of some sort.
