Councillors faced a tsunami of opposition to a joint local government water initiative during hearings in Clutha yesterday. The Clutha District Council heard 25 verbal submissions to its Southern Water Done Well proposals at its Balclutha chambers, a majority of which opposed the council’s preferred option.

A sample of submissions for a joint local government water initiative suggests officials may have a fight on their hands. The Clutha District Council meets in Balclutha today for hearings on its Southern Water Done Well proposals. Thirty-three groups and individuals are scheduled to speak to their submissions regarding the proposals, under which Clutha would join forces with the Waitaki, Central Otago and Gore District Councils to manage water services infrastructure and delivery.

A new South Otago venue will not provide pokies for patrons, the Clutha Licensing Trust says. Trust general manager Ross Balloch confirmed the change yesterday, after it was revealed during a Clutha District Council committee meeting in Balclutha. The trust expects to open a replacement for the former Hotel South Otago, or "Southy", in the next three months, renamed "The Arches".
