Permission to run the landfill, which is next to a polluted stream and estuary full of rubbish, expired 18 months ago. However, a new dump site at Smooth Hill, granted permission by the Environment Court in May 2023, is not yet ready.

The Otago Daily Times recently spotted the incredibly rare, flightless blue bird crossing the road in the Hollyford Valley. Department of Conservation takahē project lead Jason Van De Wetering said the bird was called Tucker.

    Long-standing Ngāi Tahu rights that could lead to joint management of South Island waterways are being deliberated by a High Court judge. The landmark case, lodged by Ngāi Tahu in 2020, finished eight weeks of hearings in the High Court at Christchurch yesterday before Judge Melanie Harland. Ngāi Tahu’s case calls for declarations to be made by Judge Harland about the iwi’s rights to rangatiratanga (chiefly authority) over wai Maori (freshwater) in its takiwā (territory).
