Shortly after 10 a.m. Friday, a construction crew working at a home on Lawndale Avenue in the Sixth Ward struck an unmarked gas line, which caused a leak and “a noticeable odor,” Sixth Ward Councilmember Tom Suffredin informed residents in a news alert. “However, there is no danger to the public,” Suffredin wrote. “Nicor Gas and the Evanston Fire Department are on the scene, and repairs are expected to take a few hours. Lawndale Avenue is closed between Hartzell Street and Park Place.

Evanston photographer Alan Teller spent much of 2024 creating portraits of city residents who are 75 and older. But they are not usual photo portraits. “I create the central portrait, then, for the most part, each person chooses the images surrounding. Things that I photograph at their direction or that they supply,” said Teller. Then, each of the subjects writes a statement about their life. The result, called “Still at It,” was shown at the Open Studio Project, 901 Sherman Ave.

It was an experiment at Evanston SPACE: Local songwriters performing original music. “It was a hit,” said emcee Noah Plotkin (right), “and we are going to keep it going.” Plotkin, who works at SPACE, invited four of his favorites: Gerald Dowd (from left), Al Rose, Sara Jean Stevens and Steve Karras, who gathered backstage at 1245 Chicago Ave. just before the free event called “A Songwriter’s Showcase.” Some of the writers — like Dowd and Stevens — perform frequently.

Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority fill the City Council chambers in crimson as they join Mayor Daniel Biss after being recognized for the 50th anniversary of the service sorority’s work in Evanston. Community beacons Delores Holmes, Dorothy Williams, Valerie Summers and JoAnn Avery were Delta sisters in the Evanston-North Shore Alumnae Chapter. “I’m very proud you have served our community for 50 years,” said Council Member Krissie Harris (2nd Ward).
