    A little more than two weeks after Pope Francis died, the College of Cardinals on Thursday in Vatican City announced their selection of the first American pope: Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was born in Chicago in 1955. Prevost took the name Pope Leo XIV, the first to choose Leo since Leo XIII, an Italian pope who died in 1903. Leo XIII was known for being outspoken in support of working people’s right to a living wage.

    Evanston Police arrested 61-year-old Skokie resident Debra Cohen on Friday, May 2, for the alleged hit-and-run that injured a 63-year-old pedestrian on the afternoon of April 25 at the corner of Grove Street and Chicago Avenue, EPD said in a Thursday afternoon news release. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Cohen with leaving the scene of an accident, a Class 4 felony in Illinois, and failure to render aid, a misdemeanor.

    The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office charged 57-year-old Evanston resident John Ross Sr. with two counts of attempted first degree murder for allegedly shooting at two victims, at least one a family member, on Saturday night, May 3, police said in a press release published Monday afternoon. According to the Evanston Police Department, Ross got into a verbal altercation with a family member, a 34-year-old Evanston man, at Ross’ home in the 2300 block of Greenwood Street.

That plan called for cutting 73 positions from the district’s staff. After spending months deciding who stays and who goes, the administration revealed the specific roles that are being eliminated at the Monday, May 5 board meeting.
