BackgroundThis review will use definitions of physical activity and exercise endorsed by the US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, with the former referring to bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles and resulting in energy expenditure, and the latter referring to “a subcategory of physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposive in the sense that improvement or maintenance of one or more components of physical fitness is the objective” [1].
